Car sales in India, which fell 9% in June, jumped 17% to 280,200 units in July as consumers adjusted to the debut of the country’s new goods and services tax, says the Society of India Automobile Manufacturers.

Last month’s upturn was driven by market leader Maruti Suzuki India, whose domestic deliveries zoomed 22% to 153,300 vehicles. Second-place Hyundai saw its sales advance 4% to 43,000 units.

July sales also were buoyed by the prospects of a good monsoon season and plentiful crops, which fueled demand in rural markets, the Economic Times reports.
