New-car sales in Thailand will drop 6% to 750,000 units this year but rise 7% to 800,000 units in 2017, the Federation of Thai Industries predicts.

Last month the trade group predicted 4% growth in domestic sales next year. The federation forecasts that Thailand’s auto industry will export about 1.2 million vehicles in 2017, up 2%.

Reuters notes that car sales in Thailand have been sluggish since the government ended a subsidy program for first-time buyers four years ago. The scheme had triggered an 81% jump in demand.
