Car Sales Gain 6% in Europe

Deliveries of passenger vehicles, which grew 3% to 1.19 million units across Europe in July, climbed 6% year-on-year to 903,100 unit in August, according to industry group ACEA.

Last month’s sales shrank 6% to 76,400 units in the U.K. But volume rose in Europe’s four other largest markets: Germany (+4% to 253,700 units), France (+9% to 107,400), Italy (+16% to 83,400) and Spain (+13% to 72,400).

Results were similar in July. Sales in the U.K. fell 9% to 162,000 units, but demand rose in Germany (+2% to 283,100 units), France (+11% to 147,500), Italy (+6% to 145,800) and Spain (+3% to 109,900).

July sales fell for Ford (-7% to 75,800 units) and Opel (-8% to 71,000). They improved for Volkswagen Group (+1% to 292,100 vehicles), Renault (+8% to 118,600), PSA (+8% to 117,900) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (+1% to 79,300).

July results were mixed for the market’s best-selling luxury marques. BMW brand sales slipped 1% to 58,800 units, but demand for Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicles jumped 11% to 73,100 units. Audi sales rose 4% to 69,600 cars and crossovers.

August results saw VW Group sales advance 3% to 229,300 units. PSA’s sales zoomed 79% to 136,900 cars last month because of the inclusion of the just-acquired Opel brand. Other gainers were Renault (+13% to 90,800 units) and FCA (+10% to 52,700). Ford dropped 4% to 52,700 deliveries.

Asian brands grew 10% to 183,900 units in July and 8% to 156,900 vehicles in August, according to ACEA.
