Car sales in France were unchanged at 148,600 units in May, according to industry association CCFA. Demand through the first five months of 2014 totaled 148,600 vehicles, up 3%.

PSA Peugeot Citroen's sales last month rose 4% to 56,800 units, and rival Renault posted group sales of 33,600, up 9%. Volkswagen's sales advanced 1% to 20,900 units.

In Spain, passenger car sales reached 82,500 units last month compared with 70,500 in May 2013, trade group ANFAC reports.

Demand has now improved year on year for the past nine months, thanks to a long-running government-industry incentive program that began in October 2012.

New-car sales in Spain rose 16% in January-May this year, according to ANFAC.
