California hopes to put 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2025. Now the California Air Resources Board proposes a $265,000 study to assess the actual market for such cars.

The board notes that California has conducted earlier studies to determine consumer interest in various zero-emission options. Current polls have assessed attitudes among all new-vehicle buyers, not just those who buy ZEVs.

CARB says the new research project will take a broader and more holistic approach. It also will correlate monthly ZEV sales data with census and geographic information in an attempt to better understand what factors influence ZEV sales in the state.

The board says the study will include demographics, neighborhood behavior, types of ZEVs available and such policy-driven factors as access to high-occupancy vehicle lanes, gasoline prices and availability of electric chargers.
