General Motors Co.’s Cadillac luxury arm debuted its all-new XT4 compact crossover vehicle this week at the New York auto show.

The 2019-model will be introduced this autumn with a starting price of about $35,800. Cadillac is targeting annual sales for the vehicle of more than 50,000 units in the U.S., which would make it the top-selling model in the compact crossover segment.

The XT4 was engineered and designed by the youngest development team GM has ever used for a new vehicle, Cadillac says. Competitors will include the Acura RDX, BMW X3, Lexus NX and Mercedes GLC.

Power will come from a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The engine features cylinder deactivation and two valve lift settings.

The engine is mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission to provide a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rating of 27 mpg. A twin-clutch all-wheel-drive system is optional.

Other goodies include an electro-hydraulic brake assist system and active sport suspension. The latter uses electronic sensors to continuously monitor the road and make damping adjustments every 2 milliseconds.
