Most nameplates offered in the American market have standard or optional backup cameras now.
The University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute estimates 97% of backup crashes involve hitting another vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says back-over accidents cause 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries per year.
NHTSA predicts more than 70% of new models will already be equipped with standard backup cameras by 2018. That's when the agency will require the technology in all new vehicles that weigh less than 10,000 lbs. The rule originally had been scheduled to begin this year.
