General Motors Co.’s Buick arm is eschewing a tradition sedan in favor of wagon and sportback variants of the 2018 edition of its Regal midsize car.
The carmaker will publicly unveil the Regal Sportback and Regal TourX next week at the New York auto show.
The Sportback features a coupe-like roofline and a liftback rear hatch. The setup provides 60.7 cu-ft of cargo space (with the rear seats folded down), which Buick says is more than the new Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe.
The Regal TourX (pictured) is Buick’s first wagon since the 1990s-era Roadmaster. With 73.5-inches of cargo space, the TourX has a slightly higher ride height and is more than three inches longer than the Sportback. It’s expected to compete against the Audi A4 Allroad, Subaru Outback and Volvo XC60 Cross Country.
GM product chief Mark Reuss describes the TourX as being “very different” and a “good alternative for Buick to try.”
Both vehicles are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 250 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque (295 lb-ft for all-wheel-drive configurations). In the Sportback, the engine is mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission in the standard front-wheel-drive layout and with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic in the awd package. The TourX has standard awd.
The vehicles are based on the European Opel Insignia, as was the previous Regal sedan, and will be built in Germany. Last month GM agreed to sell Opel to PSA Group, but Reuss says the new Regals will continue to be produced at GM’s factory in Russelsheim, Germany.
