Robert Bosch LLC has launched a $40 million expansion to its technical center in Plymouth Township, Mich.

The 220,500-sq-ft extension, which is expected to be completed in November 2015, will nearly double the size of the seven-year-old center. The company says the additional space will support work on automotive electronics, engine start-stop systems and driver assistance systems related to automated driving.

The expansion will add enough office and laboratory space to co-locate an undisclosed number of employees currently working in several leased locations in southeast Michigan, according to the company.

The Plymouth tech center currently employs 850. The expanded complex will have room for 1,400, including 200 new hires over the next three years. Bosch current employs 3,200 people at 15 locations in Michigan, including its U.S. headquarters in Farmington Hills.
