BMW AG plans to recall 45,500 of its large 7 Series cars that are equipped with power-assist door latches that may not work.
The U.S. callback targets 2005-2008 models with “comfort access” and “soft close automatic” door latching options. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the devices may allow a door to open unexpectedly even if it appears secured.
NHTSA say BMW has not found a cure for the defect, so a timetable for recalling the cars has not yet been set. The agency notes that affected owners can call BMW (888-327-4236) or e-mail the company (CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com) for updates.
