BMW AG is preparing to launch two recalls in North America covering 1 million vehicles with flaws that could cause fires. The campaigns may be expanded to other countries.
The larger callback targets 740,600 of the carmaker’s 2007-2011 model 128i, 3 Series and 5 Series coupes and sedans, Z4 sports cars and X3 and X5 crossover vehicles. A device that heats the emission control system’s positive crankcase ventilation valve could rust, short circuit and result in a fire.
BMW also is recalling 672,800 of its 2006-2011 3 Series sedans to fix blower motor wiring and connectors in the cars’ heating and air-conditioning system that could overheat and cause a fire.
The company estimates that roughly 413,000 vehicles are subject to both recalls. The two campaigns are scheduled to begin on Dec. 18.
