BMW AG took the wraps off the convertible version of its 8 Series coupe this week.
Due to launch next March, the new drop-top will start at $122,400 in the U.S. The $113,000 coupe debuts next month.
Both models are powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that generates 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, automatic stop-start and standard all-wheel drive.
The convertible can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, slightly slower than the coupe. Top speed is limited to 155 mph.
The soft-top roof can be raised or lowered in about 15 seconds, including while the vehicle is traveling at speeds as high as 30 mph. BMW says the top has multiple layers to help limit noise and vibration when it is up.
The convertible includes rollover bars that deploy from behind the rear seats if risk of a rollover is detected. Other goodies include a wind deflector and optional air vents in the front seat headrests that are designed to act as neck warmers.
