BMW AG and partner Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. plan to eventually make as many as 400,000 engines per year in China at a new factory in Shenyang, Bloomberg News reports.
The plant, which will adjoin a new BMW assembly facility in Shenyang, initially will have annual capacity to produce 200,000 4-cylinder gasoline engines. The facility is expected to expand to 300,000 units in the medium term but could eventually make 400,000 engines per year.
Bloomberg says BMW, which sold 391,000 vehicles in China last year, intends to hike local manufacturing capacity from 200,000 units currently to as many as 400,000 vehicles in several years. The company opened its first engine plant in China in 2012 at Tiexi.
