The new X4 rides on the carmaker’s “CLAR” platform that debuted with the latest 7 Series sedan. The car measures 187 inches from bumper to bumper—three inches longer than the outgoing model—and has a two-inch-longer wheelbase. The new design is more than an inch wider and slightly lower in height.

Increased use of aluminum and high-strength steel saves about 110 lbs, while boosting rigidity. BMW says the weight is evenly distributed front to rear.

Engine choices, which vary by market, include a mix of diesel and gasoline 4-cylinder mills and two inline-6s for M-badged performance variants. Fitted with more advanced turbochargers and other upgrades, the engines are more powerful and fuel efficient than the ones they replace. The top-of-the-line 3.0-liter inline-6 makes 360 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, while the diesel variant kicks out 326 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque.

An 8-speed automatic transmission is standard along with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring capability. Ride dynamics are improved by a lower center of gravity and an uprated suspension, which features a double wishbone layout upfront that helps reduce unsprung mass.

Aerodynamics is 10% better with what BMW says is a best-in-class 0.30 coefficient of drag.

BMW’s Active Protection safety technology is standard on the new X4. If a collision is imminent, the system automatically tightens seatbelts and closes the windows and sunroof. Other features include hill descent control and hill start assist.

Exterior styling is sportier and maintains the current model’s coupe-like roofline. The longer wheelbase adds an inch of rear legroom and boosts trunk capacity 5%.

The revamped interior features higher-grade materials, sport seats with added support and BMW’s latest iDrive control system and touchscreen displays. Voice and hand gesture controls are optional. The available head-up display is 70% larger and boasts improved resolution (400x800 pixels).

BMW will take the wraps of the X4 at next month’s Geneva auto show. Sales will start shortly thereafter in Europe, followed by a summer launch in the U.S.
