Faulty power steering system plugs have triggered a recall of 143,200 BMW 5 Series sedans made in China.
The campaign, which is expected to begin in September, will cover vehicles assembled between 2009 and 2012 by BMW AG's 50:50 joint venture with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Co. The 5 Series is BMW's best-selling model in the country.
China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine announced the recall earlier today. It says the defective plugs pose an unspecified safety hazard.
The announcement comes a week after China's environmental ministry rejected BMW's application for a $1.5 billion plant in Shenyang because the plan fails to meet government environmental wastewater rules.
Analysts also note that foreign luxury brands have come under the scrutiny of state-controlled media recently for making too much profit on the vehicles they sell in China.
