BMW AG is recalling about 425,000 vehicles worldwide to check for loose bolts that could damage their 6-cylinder engines.
The recall covers 2010-2012 model year 1, 3 and 5 Series cars, X3, X5 and X6 crossover vehicles and Z4 sports cars, and 2012 model 6 Series cars.
The company says four fasteners that attach a housing for the engine's VANOS variable valve timing system could loosen or break and cause an oil leak. If enough oil is lost, the engine may stall, fail to start or damage itself.
The campaign began last week for 232,100 vehicles in China, where BMW says it first noticed an increase in repairs related to the issue a year ago. On Thursday the company added about 156,000 vehicles in the U.S., 20,000 in Canada, 10,000 in Germany and nearly 7,000 in Japan.
BMW also is extending the warranties on about 170,000 more 2010-2012 models with the 6-cylinder engines that so far have experienced very low repair claims.
