BMW AG says it has decided not to participate in the Detroit auto show next January as it looks for alternate ways to tout its mobility-oriented strategy.

Unlike Mercedes-Benz, which said last month it was opting out of the 2019 Detroit show, BMW’s statement doesn’t indicate that the company might reconsider a return to the event in the future.

BMW’s announcement comes as the Detroit show contemplates moving to October, beginning in 2020. Changing the show date would be accompanied by an effort to lower the cost of participation by carmakers through simpler displays and a greater focus on the vehicles themselves.

The Detroit Auto Dealers Assn., which operates the show, is expected to vote next month on whether to change the show’s date.
