BMW AG plans to replace its current rear-drive 1 Series coupe with a lineup of front- and all-wheel-drive models, including a sedan, four years from now, according to Automotive News, which cites unnamed BMW sources.

Media reports have indicated the switch to front drive a first in modern times for BMW for months. But AN's sources confirm the subcompact cars will ride on the company's new UKL (short for unter klasse, or entry-level) architecture.

The platform will debut in the new Mini hatchback BMW is scheduled to unveil at the Los Angeles auto show in November.

The 1 Series will shed its current inline 6-cylinder engine choices for an array of transversely mounted 3- and 4-cylinder direct-injection gasoline and diesel units. AN speculates that a plug-in hybrid also may be under development.

The revamped 1 Series sedan will compete with the four-door Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA. Those models both feature a similar front-wheel-drive powertrain and the roomier interior it makes possible.
