BMW AG says the “M” performance version of its new 8 Series flagship car will be powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 with an output “north of” 600 hp.

A more powerful M8 Competition model tuned to make 650 hp also is rumored. Both versions of the engine will be mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-biased all-wheel-drive, which drivers can turn off.

The M8 also gets a stiffer chassis and M-tuned electronic differential.

BMW is due to introduce the M8 coupe (pictured testing in camouflaged guise) next autumn. A convertible and Gran Coupe sedan will follow later.

The base 8 Series coupe, which is due to debut next month, and next year’s convertible variant feature a twin-turbocharged V-8 that produces 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.
