The carmaker released a darkened teaser photo of the subcompact four-door this week. Sales are due to start next year in Europe.
As its awkward name suggests, the sedan features sporty coupe-like styling cues. Highlights include a fastback rear and LED taillights.
Current 2 Series variants—a pair of MPV/crossovers, a convertible and an actual two-door coupe—share a rear-wheel-drive platform with the tiny 1 Series. But the Gran Coupe will ride on a front-wheel-drive architecture that also will underpin the next-generation 1 Series.
A variety of downsized gasoline and diesel engines will be offered in Europe. The top-line M variant is expected to be powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine that generates as much as 365 hp. A a plug-in hybrid variant also is said to be in the works.
