Big Kia SUV in the Works

Kia Motors Corp. is developing a production version of its 2016 Telluride large crossover/SUV, according to multiple media reports.

The new model would sit above the midsize Sorento in Kia’s lineup. Built on a stretched version of the Sorento, the Telluride concept (pictured) is nearly 10 inches longer and five inches wider to allow seating for seven passengers.

The Telluride’s plug-in hybrid powertrain teamed a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 400 hp. Last month Kia and parent Hyundai Motors Inc. announced plans to launch as many as 38 new electrified vehicles by 2025.

Company officials say a formal announcement about the Telluride will be made “soon.”​​​​​​
