The number of car registrations that Beijing issues monthly will be reduced again next year as the city tries to limit air pollution and traffic congestion, according to the municipal transport commission.
Under a program launched in January 2011, Beijing auctions 20,000 license plates per month. The commission says it will announce the new limits in late November.
The city's new five-year plan unveiled in September sets a limit of 6 million vehicles on its roads by 2017 compared with about 5.4 million now.
Choking smog often blankets Beijing, creating health problems for its residents. Air quality reached hazardous levels for 20 days in January, according to the U.S. embassy there. The Chinese Academy of Sciences calculates that vehicle emissions account for 22% of the particulate matter in the capital's air.
Three other Chinese cities also restrict vehicle registrations, and eight more are considering such measures.
