The average number of cars sold per U.S. dealership this year will fall to 940 from 965 last year as the overall market cools, says Detroit-based Urban Science Applications Inc.

The market research firm says the number of new-car dealerships in the U.S. has stabilized at 18,200 facilities. But the overall market is down 3% so far this year from last year’s record volume of 17.55 million units, so sales per outlet will decline.

Urban Science reports 98% of local markets have shown no net change in retail outlets in recent years.
