Demand for new passenger vehicles grew last month in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, according to local trade groups and government agencies.

LMC Automotive says August totals for western Europe expanded 5% to 801,700 cars. Results translate into an annual selling rate of 14.5 million units compared with 14.2 million for the same period last year.

Combined sales for the region rose 4% to 9.67 million units through the first eight months of 2017. LMC expects full-year sales will grow for the fourth consecutive year.

In Germany, August registrations rose 4% to 253,700 units, an eight-year high. Diesels lost 14 points of share, and gasoline cars hiked their share 15 points to 58% of the market.

In France and Italy, last month’s sales climbed 9% to 107,500 units and 16% to 83,400, respectively. Deliveries in Spain gained 13% to 72,500 vehicles.
