August Car Sales in China Jump 11%

Wholesale deliveries of passenger vehicles in China rose to 1.35 million units in August from 1.21 million a year earlier, according to the China Assn. of Automobile Manufacturers.

Passenger vehicles sales through the first eight months of the year advanced 13% to 11.3 million units. CAAM says total vehicle sales, including trucks and buses climbed 10% to 1.65 million units in August and

Total vehicle sales, including trucks and buses, climbed 10% to 1.65 million units last month. Deliveries for the first eight months of the year rose 12% to 14.0 million. CAAM expects full-year volume to reach a record 20 million units.

The association says crossovers/SUVs and multipurpose vehicles are generating the strongest growth, advancing 46% to 240,100 units and 162% to 105,600 units, respectively. Demand for conventional sedans rose 4% to 899,100 units in August.

General Motors and its partners sold a record 245,800 vehicles in China last month, up 11% from August 2012. Ford's sales jumped 46% to 71,200 units, and its Focus was the market's most popular sedan.
