Volkswagen AG's Audi unit plans to add three new crossover models by the end of the decade, thus doubling its current lineup in that fast-growing market segment, according to Bloomberg News.

Audi currently offers the small Q3, medium Q5 and large Q7 crossovers. An unidentified source tells Bloomberg the company is developing "sportier" Q2, Q4 and Q6 models.

Audi also has begun introducing performance versions of its crossovers, starting with the SQ5 that debuted in Europe last summer with a 313-hp diesel. The company unveiled a 354-hp gasoline SQ5 at the Detroit auto show last month.

IHS Automotive notes that Audi's strategy will give the company a crossover portfolio that closes mirrors its lineup of cars, which ranges from the tiny A1 coupe to the fullsize A8 sedan.

Bloomberg says high-end crossovers are rapidly redefining the term "luxury car." IHS forecasts that global demand for luxury crossovers will surge 36% by 2018.
