Audi has released official design sketches of its redesigned TT sports car ahead of a public unveiling at the Geneva auto show in two weeks.

The third-generation model retains the original's rounded roof but adds more character lines, a lower and more angular grille and narrower headlights. The car's exterior dimensions are expected to be almost identical to those of the current TT.

The new sports car migrates to parent company Volkswagen AG's MQB (modular transverse matrix) platform. The chassis was inaugurated by the Audi A3 sedan and carries the VW Golf five-door hatch, VW Up! minicar and upcoming Audi Q1 small crossover.

Autocar say the new TT will carry over the current model's suspension system and powertrain lineup, including all-wheel drive. A new electromechanical steering system is being touted as more responsive.

The magazine says the 2+2 model debuting in Geneva will be followed by a two-seat roadster likely to be unveiled at the Paris auto show in September.
