Volkswagen AG's Audi unit intends to introduce the Q1, a subcompact crossover riding on VW's Polo chassis, in three years, according to AutoBild, which cites no sources. Audi has declined to comment.

The front-drive vehicle will derive its powertrain from the Audi A1 supermini hatchback, the German magazine says. It adds that Audi won't offer all-wheel drive but does plan to add a gasoline-electric hybrid option in 2018.

Observers say the Q1 will be a variant of the Taigun subcompact crossover that Volkswagen unveiled in concept form at the Sao Paulo auto show a year ago. Reports at the time speculated that Audi, SEAT and Skoda all might sell variants.

The Taigun sits on VW's ultra-flexible modular transverse matrix platform, which also carries the Audi A3 and VW Golf and Up! small cars.

Other European carmakers have already introduced tiny crossovers, notably Opel (Mokka), Peugeot (2008) and Renault (Captur). If the 2016 launch date for the Q1 is correct, the new Audi appears likely to become the segment's first luxury model.
