Countering a report earlier this month, Audi AG says it has no plans to produce a sedan version of its tiny TT sport coupe.

At one time the carmaker considered creating a family of TT vehicles, Audi officials tell the Australian-based website CarAdvice. Audi hinted at a sedan variant of the TT with the TT Sportback concept (pictured) in 2014.

Rising development costs—due in part to the need to include electrified powertrains—and fear of eroding the TT’s iconic image, would have made it difficult to add a sedan or other variants of the sporty small car, says Peter Oberndorfer, Audi's head of communications. He says the company is “quite happy” with just the TT coupe.

Audi introduced the TT in 1999. The fourth-generation model is expected to bow early next decade.
