Audi AG is expanding the availability of its laser headlight technology in the U.S. by standardizing the feature on the V10 Plus variant of its R8 supercar and making it an option on other versions of the R8.
Audi began offering laser headlights on select models three years ago in Europe. The carmaker launched the technology last autumn in the U.S., but applications were limited to 25 special edition R8s.
The laser system is teamed with LED lights, which are used at vehicle speeds below 40 mph. The laser headlights are triggered to take over at higher speeds to enhance visibility by projecting a low, wide beam, Audi says.
The headlight modules contain four high-intensity laser diodes, which emit a blue light at the 450-nanometer wavelength. A phosphor converter transforms the blue laser beam into white light.
The 2018 R8 also gets several appearance tweaks, such as new badging, anthracite high-gloss inlays and other high-end accents. Other upgrades include a standard smartphone interface, 19-inch forged wheels and a “puddle light” that is activate when the driver or passenger door is opened.
