Volkswagen AG's Audi unit is launching its 2015 model A3 small sedan in the U.S. this spring on a platform that will add five new models for the American market within the next 16 months.
Among the new variants will be a cabriolet and high-performance S-series sedan.
The four-door A3's 103.8-inch wheelbase is 1.3 inches longer than the previous model and uses VW's global "MDQ" transverse-engine platform. The modular system shares major subassemblies but allows dimensional variations.
The new architecture features aluminum subframes to support the front MacPherson strut suspension and rear four-link setup. Suspension components are aluminum, as is the hood. Audi says an expanded use of high-strength steel stiffens and lightens the body structure, contributing to a curb weight of less than 3,200 lbs for the fwd base model.
Audi will produce the new $29,900 A3 at its plant in Gyor, Hungary.
The sedan will be offered in the U.S. with a choice of two turbocharged direct-injection 4-cylinder engines. Standard front-drive models will be powered by a 1.8-liter unit that makes 170 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel-drive versions will use a new 2.0-liter engine that makes 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
Both engines are mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. An optional 6-speed manual will be offered in Europe and other markets but not in the U.S.
The 2.0-liter turbo features Audi's variable-lift valve architecture. The system can select two cam profiles for the intake valves depending upon power demand. The shifts are made by a mechanical actuator that slides two cam lobes back and forth along the camshaft.
Audi says the technology will give the 2.0-liter-powered awd version of the A3 an additional 1 mpg on the Environmental Protection Agency's city driving cycle compared with the front-drive 1.8-liter model. The new engine also gains 3 mpg in highway driving compared to Audi's previous 2.0-liter powerplant.
Audi will add a 2.0-liter diesel for the A3 later this year, followed by a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
