Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd. plans to launch a new supercar in 2021 as a follow-up to the limited-edition Valkyrie that’s due in 2019.
The 2021 model is expected to compete against the McLaren 720S and Ferrari 488 GTB supercars, elevating Aston Martin into the upper echelon of supercars. The vehicle will feature a mid-engine design and otherwise build on the upcoming Valkyrie, Aston Martin boss Andy Palmer tells Autocar at this week’s Geneva auto show.
The Valkyrie, which will be Aston Martin’s first mid-engine model, will help boost the brand’s profile ahead of the 2021 supercar, Palmer says. The carmaker is developing the vehicle, which had been codenamed AM-RB 001, with Red Bull’s Formula One racing team. The Valkyrie name was announced earlier this week in Geneva.
Development of the supercar will be headed up by Max Szwaj, who joined Aston in December from Ferrari as chief technical officer (CTO). He’ll will work with design chief Marek Reichman on the new supercar.
Reichman and Red Bull’s CTO Adrian Newey teamed up on the Valkyrie. Palmer says Newey also could have some involvement on the supercar.
