Apple Inc. has introduced iOS in the Car, an operating platform designed to link an in-vehicle display with call, map, messaging and other iPhone-like applications.
Apple offers no details about the new platform. But it says the system will debut next year in vehicles from such brands as Acura, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Kia, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Opel and Volvo.
About 95% of new cars sold now already enable a vehicle's audio system to control music from an iOS device, according to Apple. It says its new platform expands that capability by enabling drivers to access other features familiar to iPhone and iPad owners by using buttons or the company's Siri "Eyes Free" voice command feature.
One example: The system can read incoming instant messages and allow the drive to dictate and send a response without glancing away from the road. Siri also can be used to place calls, play music, display maps and get driving directions.
Analysts say Apple's iOS could greatly improve the user experience with some current in-car telematics systems. But they also caution that carmakers may balk at ceding control of such capabilities to an outside company.
