Launched in March 2014, the system allows users to access various iPhone functions directly through a vehicle’s infotainment system. The latest expansion in availability for the feature encompasses a variety of 2017- and 2018-model Audi, Honda, Maserati, Jeep, Kia, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Volkswagen models.
The 2017 BMW 5 Series car is expected to be the first model available with a built-in wireless CarPlay connection, according to media reports.
Many new vehicles support both CarPlay and Google Inc.’s similar Android Auto system. Smartphone interfaces also can be retrofitted into some older vehicles via aftermarket devices.
