India’s Apollo Tyres Ltd. expects to open its fifth factory next year, a $78 million facility with initial monthly capacity to make 500,000 tires for motorcycles, scooters and pickups.

Apollo says the facility eventually will be able to make 3 million tires per month.

The company also is opening a $13 million r&d center near Chennai to serve Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. The company opened a similar facility in Holland three years ago to support the European and American markets.

Apollo also operates two advanced technical centers. A facility in Bengaluru, India, works on integrating electronics into tire technology. Another r&d center in Raunheim, Frankfurt, provides German carmakers with support for its Apollo and Vredestein brands.
