McLaren Automotive Ltd. has rolled out its most exclusive production car ever: a full racing version of its P1 supercar priced at $3.3 million.
Dubbed the McLaren P1 GTR, the track-only car will go on sale in mid-2015 about the same time the standard P1 ends its production run. It will be offered only to the 375 people who already own the street-version P1.
McLaren guesses it will sell 25-30 of the hyper cars.
The GTR's twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 will make 986 hp, or 83 hp more than the standard P1. The car also has an 80-mm wider front track, more aggressive front splitter, a large fixed rear wing, fixed ride height, redesigned centrally mounted exhaust system and custom Pirelli racing slick tires.
Among the numerous aerodynamic tweaks are eye-level exterior rear view mirrors, smoother body work over the rear engine pay, a redesigned rear diffuser and custom air handling bodywork along the lower sides of the car from wheel well to wheel well.
Contributing to enhanced performance are a more powerful "instant power assist" system, an energy recovery push-to-pass feature and a Formula One-inspired high-speed drag reduction system for the rear wing. The GTR comes with its own air-powered jacking system for tire changes during pit stops.
Buyers will receive a one-on-one driver training that includes human performance analysis and access to McLaren race engineers, designers and test drivers. They'll also get plenty of time in the company's racing simulator, which McLaren says will help prepare drivers mentally and physically to cope with the GTR's performance levels.
