Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s Alfa Romeo brand is returning to Formula One racing in 2018 after a hiatus of more than 30 years.
Alfa has signed a multi-year deal as title sponsor of F1’s Sauber team, which will be renamed Alfa Romeo Sauber. The agreement covers strategic, commercial, technological and engineering cooperation.
The team’s cars, which will sport the Alfa logo and a new color scheme, will be powered by Ferrari engines.
Alfa participated in F1 between 1950 and 1988 as a constructor and engine supplier, winning two drivers’ championships with Nino Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio.
FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne says the return to F1 will help reshape and relaunch the brand. Alfa’s just-launched Giulia and Stelvio cars have been well received by performance car enthusiasts.
