Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV will take the wraps off its long-delayed crossover/SUV next week at the Los Angeles auto show.
The midsize model, which is expected to be called the Stelvio, will share a rear-wheel-drive platform with the Fiat Giulia sedan. All-wheel drive will be optional.
Recent spy photos of a camouflaged prototype reveal a coupe-like roofline. Media reports suggest the new crossover will borrow the Giulia’s 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and possibly the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 that powers Alfa’s top-end Quadrifoglio sedan. A 2.2-liter diesel option is expected in Europe.
Other components are expected to be shared with upcoming Fiat and Jeep crossover/SUVs.
Alfa Romeo has hinted about a crossover for years. It showed the Kamal concept in 2003 and at one time hoped to enter the crossover market by 2012.
Sales of the Stelvio are due to begin early next year. As many as four other Alfa crossovers reportedly are in the works.
