A new system from Continental Corp. uses sensors embedded in tires to estimate remaining tread depth and alert drivers when they need to replace worn rubber.

The feature augments but doesn't replace the traditional tread wear indicators that enable motorists to visually check on the condition of their tires.

Conti says its technology will debut in 2017 as an option in vehicles fitted with sensor-equipped tires and the company's tire pressure monitoring system.

The electronic feature uses custom software to infer tread depth by analyzing subtle changes in the rolling characteristics and deformation of tires as they wear. Readings are compared with test results compiled by Conti researchers to correlate the changes with actual tread wear.

The system includes a telematics module that, if the driver wishes, can automatically alert a local dealership or service center about the needed tire change.
