Shelby International Inc.’s Shelby American unit is introducing a limited-edition version of its Ford Mustang-based Super Snake coupe to celebrate the model's 50th anniversary.

The commemorative Super Snake, which is based on the Mustang GT Fastback, costs $70,000—including $37,000 for the donor vehicle. Production will be limited to 500 units.

The 50th Anniversary Super Snake will be powered by a supercharged version of the Mustang’s 5.0-liter V-8 engine tuned to generate 670 hp. Other goodies include forged aluminum wheels, a louder exhaust note, a special “track handling” system, side skirts, new air diffuser, trunk spoiler and a new grille with mesh inserts. Buyers can choose between automatic and manual transmissions.

An optional upgrade with a larger supercharger boosts output to 750 hp. The system is teamed with an extreme cooling package, a one-piece driveshaft and Ford Performance half-shafts.

Shelby says the 750-hp Super Snake can race from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and cover a quarter mile in 10.9 seconds.
