Toyota Motor Corp. is tweaking the name of its subcompact sedan in the U.S. again.

The vehicle, which is called the Yaris iA, will simply be known as the Yaris when the 2019 model debuts this autumn. The Mazda-built small car previously was marketed as the “iA” under Toyota’s youth-oriented Scion sub-brand, which was discontinued after the 2016-model year.

Toyota is adopting a similar strategy for the Corolla iM hatchback that it inherited from Scion. That vehicle will be known as the Corolla hatchback for 2019.

Styling changes for the renamed Yaris sedan included revamped front end, which features giantic grille with a honeycomb insert. Three trim levels are available, compared to just one for the outgoing Yaris iA.

Power outside mirrors are standard on all models, while the LE and XLE variants get heated mirrors with LED turn-signal indicators. The top-line XLE also sports a host of leather and “leatherette” trim throughout the interior, automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers and illuminated entry.

Power comes from a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 106 hp and 103 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can choose between a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 6-speed automatic, which Toyota estimates will yield fuel economy ratings of 34 mpg and 35 mpg, respectively.

Toyota also will continue to offer the Yaris hatchback, which rides on a different platform. That vehicle is known in Japan as the Vitz.
