General Motors Co. GMC truck unit will offer the company’s new 3.6-liter V-6 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission in the 2017 Canyon midsize pickup truck that will arrive in U.S. dealerships later this year.
The new V-6, which debuted this year in several Cadillac models, includes variable-valve timing, improved direct injection and cylinder deactivation to increase fuel efficiency. Power is increased slightly to 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque from the previous 3.6-liter V-6’s 305 hp and 269 lb-ft output. That engine was mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
GMC says the new powertrain allows for a 7,000-lb maximum trailer capacity. This is second-best in the segment, trailing only the 7,700-lb rating for Canyons equipped with a 2.8-liter Duramax diesel.
The new 8-speed transmission features smoother shifts, improved towing performance and reduced fuel consumption than the outgoing 6-speed unit, according to GMC. The gearbox also is available on several other GM vehicles, including the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado pickup, which is the Canyon’s twin.
