An explosion at a Schaeffler Group factory in Eltmann, Germany, earlier today injured 13 people, four of them seriously enough to be airlifted by helicopter to a hospital.

One report says the blast, which caused a small fire, may have been linked to a problem with a cleaning system for industrial salt.

The facility is located north of Nuremberg and employs about 500 people. The plant makes roller bearings for Schaeffler’s FAG unit. The company says no hazardous or toxic materials were released by the blast.
