Drive, He Said

Evidently today is “Car-Free Day.” We would have missed it were it not for a notification from the Competitive Enterprise Institute which, as you might assume, is pro-car. And, obviously, we’re not averse to them, either.

Yet we find the rationale for why cars are significantly important put forth by the CEI to be somewhat, well, amusing. As they put it:

“For a realistic day of car-free living, try it:

• When it’s raining
• When you’re carrying several bags of groceries
• When you’re carrying a baby, with a toddler alongside you
• On crutches
• After midnight
• Without using a car or cab to get to the train or bus station
• Any combination of the above”

If it is after midnight and you are hobbling around on crutches in the rain with groceries, a baby, and a toddler, chances are you need more than a car.
