Design Your Own Rolls-Royce Ghost

This is the Rolls-Royce Ghost, with its stately “Yacht Line” styling, with large, flowing bodyside surfaces, strong shoulders that tighten toward the rear of the vehicle, an upward sweeping sill, low-cut roof, sharply raked A-pillar, and long hood. “Simplicity is the hardest design principle to follow,” said Ian Cameron, Rolls chief designer, of the Ghost’s design.   Yes, there’s “simple.” And then there’s “Rolls-Royce simple.” Under that hood—or “bonnet,” to be more British about it—there is an all-new 6.6-liter, twin-turbo V12 engine fitted to an eight-speed shift-by-wire ZF automatic transmission.

Rolls Ghost

Yes, there’s “simple.” And then there’s “Rolls-Royce simple.”

Under that hood—or “bonnet,” to be more British about it—there is an all-new 6.6-liter, twin-turbo V12 engine fitted to an eight-speed shift-by-wire ZF automatic transmission. The engine produces 563 bhp, which moves the Ghost at an unstately 0 to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds.

The Ghost is produced with care, involving the high-touch involvement of 60 people. There are some 2,000 operations required to put the Ghost together. It takes a minimum of 20 days.

So, what’s this about designing your own? “As if”—right?

Rolls App

Well, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has developed its first app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to create your own ideal Ghost. Colors, accessories, leathers, woods—it’s all there.

And the app allows you to search for your nearest Rolls-Royce dealer. Just in case.
