Senior Managing Editor

Gardner Business Media is seeking a full-time Senior Managing Editor to serve the Modern Machine Shop and Products Finishing magazine brands, and lead a team of print production editors in best practices across all of our titles. This position requires a highly organized, self-driven individual to serve as a mentor and leader to others in similar roles. He or she should have strong editing skills and knowledge of magazine production and design. Writing, editing and project management experience is a must, and mechanical or technical interest/aptitude is a plus. This position is offered in Cincinnati, Ohio, and offers comprehensive benefits and a friendly, family-oriented work environment.

Note: This role is currently and until further notice a work-from-home position during Covid-19 but will be located at our headquarters in Cincinnati once we all feel safe enough to come back to the office.  

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree with formal editorial, project management and/or journalism training

Responsibilities

The Sr. Managing Editor holds a dual role:

  • Lead a team of Gardner print production editors
    • Establish and maintain best practices and continuity in print production and management across the various Gardner brands
    • Work with the team to develop consistent and streamlined processes
    • Hold bi-monthly Production Editorial meetings
    • Manage several direct reports
  • Work directly on two editorial teams, editing content and managing print workflow for both
    • Set and manage editorial production deadlines.
    • Work with the editor, publisher and advertising and creative departments to ensure the magazines are produced in a quality manner on deadline.
    • Edit all content for accuracy, clarity, and AP and Gardner style.
    • Work with creative/design department on layouts—including images (size, order, cutting), article length, etc.
    • Receive, filter and edit industry press releases
    • Perform other editorial duties as needed, including photo and article research, fact checking, proofreading marketing materials, and handling permissions.
    • Maintain an industry-specific style guide.

Qualifications

The right person for this job will be smart and self-driven. Qualifications include:

  • Four-year college degree or university program
  • 5+ years’ experience in a writing, editing or project management position (people-managing skills are a plus)
  • Thorough knowledge of AP Style with superior copy-editing, proofreading, writing, grammar and spelling skills
  • Previous experience with content management systems
  • Thorough knowledge of editing in InDesign
  • Excellent writing, developmental editing, and communication skills
  • Organization skills with attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of project management and communication platforms such as Trello or Teams
  • Ability to juggle and prioritize work in a fast-moving environment
  • Cooperative, fun, enthusiastic attitude.
