Modern Machine Shop Assistant Editor — Writing

Gardner Business Media is seeking one full-time Assistant Editor for its industrial business magazine Modern Machine Shop and its associated media platforms, including mmsonline.com. This entry-level position requires an organized, motivated individual with deep love of writing as a craft. He or she should have strong journalism skills and openness to cultivate an interest in and understanding of manufacturing processes in order to speak directly to the concerns and interests of our audience of machining facility owners and managers.

The Assistant Editor responsibilities include:

  • Writing and editing content across a variety of formats, including print and digital editions,
    e-newsletters, blogs and social media outlets. Length of writing will range from social media posts or short pieces (800 words or less), to long-form articles (around 2,000 words) that can be presented as features in the print magazine and online.
  • Seeking, identifying and developing stories, then pitching self-discovered leads for potential articles.
  • Traveling to visit machining facilities to gather stories and photos for article assignments.
  • Developing industry relationships and confidently representing the magazine in meetings with advertisers.
  • Working independently, pursuing stories with minimal oversight with the expectation that they will be able to meet agreed-upon deadlines. Time management skills are essential. Because longer articles generally have long lead times (easily several months from first contact to story completion), the editor is invariably working on multiple stories at various stages of completion simultaneously.
  • Participating in performances such as video, webinars or public speaking.
  • Attending events on behalf of the magazine.
  • Performing other editorial duties as needed, including research, fact checking and handling permissions.

Qualifications include:

  • Four-year college degree or university program. 1-3 years’ experience in a writing position or related technical field is a plus.
  • Knowledge of AP Style with superior writing, copy editing and proofreading skills.
  • Familiarity with content management systems (such as Wordpress or other).
  • Some experience with InDesign and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn). Social media management software experience is a plus.
  • Excellent writing, developmental editing and communication skills.
  • Organization skills with attention to detail.
  • Cooperative, enthusiastic attitude.
