Gardner Business Media Capital Spending 2020 Projections Survey
During the fourth quarter of each year, Gardner Intelligence releases the results of its annual Capital Spending Projections survey. The survey asks shops about their expected capital spending “consumption” by machine type, industry, plant size and region. In 2019, Gardner Intelligence asked more than 52,000 metalworking facilities about their projected consumption in the coming year. Results from the 2020 Capital Spending survey indicate that both machine tool consumption and tooling consumption will be down by single-digit rates in 2020.

Unique to the Gardner’s surveys is the ability to segment capital spending along key dimensions including industry served, facility size and geographic region. In 2019, both the Capital Spending report and the Gardner Business Index have indicated that capital spending expectations vary greatly by the size of the shop and to which industries or “end-markets” the shop is selling its goods.
