The MiSTAR 555 from Mitutoyo America is a compact, on- or near-line CNC coordinate measuring machine (CMM) that operates on conventional 120-volt, 20-amp electrical service; no compressed air is required. The maximum permissible length measurement errors (per ISO 10360-2: 2009 and with an SP25M probe) are:

  • 64.4~71.6°F (18~22°C)      (2.2 + 3.0L/1000)µm
  • 50.0~86.0°F (10~30°C) (2.9 + 4.5L/1000)µm
  • 50.0~104.0°F (10~40°C) (3.8 + 8.0L/1000)µm

The CMM has a measuring range of 22.4 inches X, 19.6 inches Y and 19.6 inches Z. It provides movement speeds of 606mm/s and acceleration of 2,695mm/s² (3D). The open-structure design of the unit, which is said to require an installation area some 70 percent less than a conventional moving bridge-style CMM thanks to things like having the control unit and PC stored in the base of the main body structure, allows users to mount workpieces from the front, rear and right. What’s more, the design facilitates access to the inspection station for easier operability. It features the Mitutoyo Smart Measuring System, an Industry 4.0 capability that provides on-line monitoring, and a status monitor that uses the MTConnect protocol and a condition monitor that collects and evaluates various things including movement lengths, probe functions, machine errors, and other things that provide machine use statistics and assist for preventative maintenance.

Robots for Pressworking

The PH series robots from Yaskawa Motoman are specifically designed for use in stamping operations. There are two models in the line, the PH130RF and PH200RF, both of which are six-axis robots that have a shelf-mount design that (1) saves floorspace, (2) expands the work envelope and facilitates die change-out and (3) provides layout flexibility.

The PH130RF services press pitches up to 7 m and the PH200RF handles those from 6 to 8.5 m. The PH130RF has a payload capacity of 130 kg and the PH200RF 200 kg, and thanks to high moment and inertia ratings the robots can handle large blanks and formed parts.

These robots feature long-life speed reducers so they can perform highly repetitive handling operations. There are high-performance drives on the S-, L- and U-axes. They are designed to have a high vibration rating so they can deal with pressroom conditions. Both robots have a standard IP67-rated wrist and an IP30 body.

Setup is simple, with a single cable connecting the robot to the YRC1000 controller.

Vertical Spindle Machining Centers

The VMXi Series of vertical machining centers from Hurco feature a direct drive spindle. That contributes to a better surface finish. What’s more, it is quieter in operation and there is less head growth during machining operations. The 20-hp spindle operates at up to 15,000 rpm. The spindle can accelerate from 0 to 15,000 rpm in 3.2 seconds and decelerate from 15,000 to 0 rpm in 2.4 seconds. Spindle torque is 70.4 lb-ft @ 1,500 rpm. It has a Big Plus/CAT 40 spindle taper. There are 30 stations in the automatic tool changer.

Included in the series are the VMX24Di (with travels of 24 x 20 x 24 inches), VMX30Di (30 x 20 x 24 inches), and the VMX42Di (42 x 24 x 24 inches). The table size is 50 x 24 inches and it can handle loads up to 3,000 pounds.
