The 2003 World Machine-Tool Survey At A Glance

Top Producing Countries: Japanese production tumbles one-third in 2002, falling behind Germany, whose loss is smaller. The U.S. also drops one-third, while a gaining China moves ahead.

Total World Output: Top 29 countries produce $31.1-billion in 2002. That’s 14% below the value those same nations created in 2001.

Biggest Consumer: Peoples Republic of China is the biggest market, out-buying Germany by a difference of $880-million, or about all of what Canada buys.

Aggressive Exporters: Most countries’ exports fall, and Japan’s drops more sharply than Germany.

Importers: China’s appetite as biggest consumer also makes her number-one importer.

Best Machine-Tool Trade Balance: Japan holds onto reputation as having most favorable balance of trade in machine tools.
